29th Annual Winter Solstice Lantern Festival

Wednesday December 21 6:00pm-10:00pm
A False Creek Community Association partnership with the Secret Lantern Society.
The winter solstice marks the gentle shift of our planet’s eternal relationship with the sun. This dance of sun and earth has inspired celebrations of the human spirit, expressed through art and music, throughout the ages.
Our own Winter Solstice Lantern Festival illuminates the darkest night with a multicultural array of lanterns, fire, singing, dancing, music and storytelling. Please join us and add your special light to the longest night!

Lantern Workshops

Don’t be left lantern-less! Artists from the Secret Lantern Society will help you make your own beautiful lantern. All materials are provided and participants are encouraged to bring pressed leaves and flowers or other decorative elements. Price is per lantern so parent & child can create one lantern together. Children must be accompanied by an adult.*Additional time to finish lanterns will be available on Sunday Dec. 18 from
10:00-4:00pm (free with registration to any workshop).

Birthday Parties (2-8 yrs)
Celebrate your birthday with a party at False Creek Community Centre on Granville Island. Your party includes a decorated room, use of the kitchen refrigerator, and a party leader to set out play equipment or organize games to keep the party hoppin. Children arrive, have one hour in the gym, then go back to the party room for cake, food and drinks (brought by the participant). Cost is $180 for up to 20 children and includes general decorations for the birthday party room, plates, napkins and cutlery. Leader will contact you a week before your party to discuss the party details. Please phone the main office at 604-257-8195 or check our on-line registration for available dates. Please note that we have discontinued providing pizza for the party. The party parent may bring or order in food for the party. Please, absolutely no nuts.

Sportball Birthday Party (2-10 yrs)
Sportball offers high-energy, action-packed birthday parties for kids ranging in age from 2-10 years! Kids enjoy a variety of sports and supervised games in a fun, structured and safe environment; festivities finish off with a traditional birthday celebration. The kids will need to catch their breath before they blow out their candles! Parties include 60 minutes of activities followed by 60 minutes of birthday celebrations with the coach. Patrons are required to pay in full at the time of registration. Inclusions: Sportball leader, gymnasium, tables, chairs. Exclusions: decorations, table settings (plates, cutlery, cups, etc), snacks, food or beverages. Regular birthday party refund policy applies. Max. 15 kids with 1 coach, up to 20 kids with 2 coaches.

Baby Sign Language (0-2 yrs)
Babies understand and can communicate long before they are able to speak. Research shows that babies who learn Sign Language learn quicker and talk earlier. Using songs and games learn how to teach your baby basic American Sign Language (ASL) so they can better convey their wants and needs and relieve unnecessary frustration. The instructor will teach you the signs and songs so you can practice at home. Babies can sleep during class or you can bring some toys. Newborn-24 months.

Piano Lessons (Private) (6-12 yrs)
A fun and practical approach to learning piano. These 30-minute lessons are for students of all ages who seek to gain a well-rounded knowledge of piano that includes performance, technique, artistry and theoretical skills. This drop-in play program provides tots with physical play and supports social interaction for you and your child. Children jump in the bouncy castle, roll and climb on the mats, drive the toy cars, cook at the toy kitchen and jump start their day. This weight training class is for youth between 13-18 years old wanting introduction to basic weight training while learning proper form, technique, and understanding the body and different muscle groups used during an exercise. Friday Night Live Funtivities: Family Movie Night (Grades 5-7)
Tis the season! To kick off the winter holidays, the families of our youth are invited to join us for a special holiday movie night. Snacks will be available for purchase at our youth-run concession with proceeds going back into our youth program initiatives. Families are welcome to bring blankets or fold-able chairs to sit on. Seating opens at 6:30pm and movie starts at 7:00pm. To attend, please register your child. Each child will be allowed to bring up to 4 people with them. Looking to enjoy your day off school? Come join us for some fun with a different out trip each time. A combination pottery course for Hand Building and Wheel Throwing.Hand Building: Basic introduction to pottery making in a fun studio environment. You will create functional pottery using hand-building techniques. Wheel Throwing: Learn the art of wheel throwing! Join the pottery instructor, as they lead demonstrations of basic to advanced throwing skills and decorating and finishing techniques. Get acquainted with wheel work or take your throwing to the next level. Clay must be purchased at the first class.
